Parade & Grand Marshals

Local Centurion ~Bertha E. Adams To Be Grand Marshal for Alpine Days

As a fitting tribute, Bertha Elthera Brems Adams will celebrate her century status as Grand Marshal of the Alpine Days parade on Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Bertha turns 100 years old on August 21st. She was born in 1910 in Lehi, Utah to John and Margaret Wilcox Brems. She attended Lehi schools, then studied nursing and worked for the Red Cross. On December 3, 1930 Bertha married John Quincy Adams, of Alpine, in the Salt Lake Temple. Six children were born to the happy couple ~~Vivian LuDene, David Morrell, Francis Delaine, Margaret Jane, Cleora Elthera, and John Brems Adams. Besides being a mother and grandmother, Bertha is a great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and possibly a third great grandmother! She is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and filled a Stake LDS Mission with her husband from 1958 to 1960.

Bertha has been a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for 78 years. She enjoys writing short history stories and poetry. She is a beautiful quilter, and wishes she could count all the quilts she has made over the years! Another of Bertha Adams’ talents is music. She plays piano, guitar, and has sung with the Singing Mothers at the Salt Lake Tabernacle during General Conference, under the direction of Florence Madsen. In addition, Bertha helped to organize what was called “The Fun Band”, which included instrumentalists from Alpine and American Fork, Utah. They enjoyed performing
all over the valley.

It gives Bertha much joy when she thinks of the many ‘wonders’ that she has witnessed in her lifetime.
The following poem was especially written by Bertha for this occasion:

“UTAH”
By Bertha Brems Adams

It’s Utah, the State of Utah
The goal of our pioneers.
Their courage and dreams as they
pushed their way
Through life’s death and tears.
It’s Utah they set out to conquer.
For Zion was at the end of the trail
They listened to words of council
With faith they would never fail.
I myself have traveled the States of our
Country
And visited the wonders so great,
But none can compare with the City of
Alpine
And our own beautiful Utah State!
